The Rehab & Retirement Yard
We officially opened our main yard in January 2018, which is home to our retired, rehabbing or non-ridden residents and consists of 3 main non-grass paddock paradise track systems spread over 18 acres of undulating land. Our track systems purposely encourage movement, healing, free choice and natural behaviours, allowing horses to be horses.
Our goal is to optimise your horse's health, regardless of age or medical history, whilst they thrive, socialise, forage, move and play in an environment that fulfils their every need as a species.
Track 2 & 3
We have two main track systems at this site, each spanning roughly 1200 metres in length, where we house our two largest herds. The herds contain horses of all ages, sizes and breeds, many of which have complex medical histories or ongoing issues that require continual monitoring.
Both track systems contain natural shelter as well as field shelters, ponds and automatic water troughs, feeding stations, hills, scratching brushes, water buffets, water misters, salt and mineral licks and feeding pens.
Herd 2 and 3 are similar in herd size but are different in personalities, energy levels and suitability, providing flexibility with what herd and dynamics your horse would be suited to best.
Herd Living
Both our retired and rehabbing residents are kept in mixed herds, each member different in age, breed, size and all with different medical issues. This is done to encourage their natural behaviours and movement to help lessen their overall anxiety and stress levels, whilst facilitating better overall health.
Companionship is one of the many important values here at PB as we believe horses and ponies better build confidence, strengthen muscle, socialise and relax better when together. With new arrivals, we will discuss their history, medical issues and personalities when deciding with the owner what herd they would be most suited to.
Care
Despite specialising in the care, management and rehabilitation of Laminitis and EMS, the team here at PB are very experienced in working with horses of old age, anxiety, resource guarding behaviours, lameness, injuries, ulcers, obesity, weight loss, arthritis and various hoof pathologies.
We take great pride in our work and are dedicated to your horse, treating each one of our residents as if they were our own.
We are more than happy to administer medication on a daily basis or monitor ongoing health issues.
Hoof Care
We are a barefoot only yard, and consider optimising your horse's hoof health a vital aspect of their overall care.
Kelly Higgins is our resident hoof care provider - a registered ISNCHP practitioner trained by Jaime Jackson. The ISNHCP offers comprehensive horse and hoof care education based upon the research and findings of the Great Basin wild horses, conducted by Jaime Jackson, and application of these findings on domestic horses. Their Natural Trim Training Program is the first professional natural hoof care training program for humane barefoot horses based on the wild horse model, with their work dating back to 2000. Jaime Jackson not only fathered the natural trim, but he also created the concept paddock paradise (track systems).
If required, we have extensive experience transitioning horses from shod to barefoot and are able to help any new horses do this upon arrival.
Updates
We understand not seeing your horse every day can be incredibly difficult, which is why we try our very best to make sure you stay informed, regularly updated and receive videos and photos as often as you'd like.
We also write progress reports every 6 months so you can stay updated with all aspects of their care and wellbeing.
Owners are welcome to visit as little or as often as they'd like, with the exception of no in the dark visits to the retirement or rehabilitation yard.
